Review: LimeCrime "Cosmopop" Opaque Lipstick

LimeCrime, LimCrime, LimeCrime...What comes to mind when you run across this brand? Super pigmented lipsticks, with VERY bold colours. In all honesty, colours which I wouldn't even touch with a ten-foot pole. After all, I'm a nude lip fanatic (gotta admit that I'm trying to curb that obsession these days :( ), and their lipstick colours are just "so-not-me", especially after watching some reviews on YouTube which mostly feature pink/fuschia/purple shades like Great Pink Planet, AirBorne Unicorn, Centrifushia and Countessa Fluorescent.

However, curiosity got the better of me, and I went hunting for swatches. Lo and behold, I chanced upon Cosmopop which (on swatches from LimeCrime and Temptalia) reminds me of my HG peachy nude, MAC Peachstock. I'm always on the lookout for a dupe since it's been discontinued and unfortunately, Peachstock can get cakey on my lips - definitely a high-maintenance lippie.

So, before the review proper, let's look at the fun aspects of the lipstick which makes it oh-so-appealing to the young (and young at heart).

Packaging
----------------
Any lover of MAC Heatherette's packaging will swoon over this. If anything, LimeCrime's tube is bordering on fushia as opposed to Heatherette's hot pink. Not to mention the silver unicorn and stars which makes it look carefree, New Age and "hippie"? I'm not in my 20s anymore, so the packaging is not too appealing to me, unfortunately. It's just not something I could whip out, without feeling slightly embarrassed, but that's just me being a prude... :P

Extra Fun Stuff
------------------------
This is ONE aspect which I've not heard any other reviewers mention. EVERY lipstick from LimeCrime has a little write-up for the person who uses it. In the case of my Cosmopop, the write-up is:

If anyone knew how to arrive in style, it was her: the line outsidethe Cosmopop Club couldn’t help but turn their heads in unison, as ifby remote control, when she pulled up to the third floor entrance onSixth Avenue. The spotless white door to her convertible FerrariHovercraft opened to reveal pale orange leather seats and, at first, asingle shining white boot. She was tall already; with the platforms, she owned the street. She parked her hovercraft with the authority of aqueen beside a large sign that read No Parking, removed her largesunglasses to take one quick look at the man taking money from thepatrons, and strode through the open door behind him. And that was whenthe party began.
Now, THIS part I love because...I can fantasize about the above every time I use Cosmopop? LOL Thus the lippie you choose kind of gives a sense of (fantasy) identity? ^_^

On to the serious stuff - the lipstick itself.

COLOUR
---------------
The shade, in LimeCrime, is described as:
Buttery, softened orange. Think creamsicle!
and indeed, it DOES look like so on LimeCrime and Temptalia.

Sadly, on my SUPER pigmented lips, it looks like this: A very bright coral (bordering on orange, actually). I'm so sad, because apart from the colour which I had SUCH high hopes on, I love everything else about it - the texture, the coverage... *sobs*

TEXTURE
-----------------
The texture is very smooth. I believe, in Temptalia's review, she mentioned that Cosmopop has a chalkier consistency than the other colours? Well, coming from a person who is already very acclimatised to MAC's nude matte lipsticks, this just glides on like butter - I kid you not (Note: for it's price, I'm not comparing it to my HE lippies). In fact, if you use it everyday, I'm pretty sure it's quite an easy one to hit-tube on LOL

I don't find it at all drying actually, but like I said, I'm very acclimatised to drying matte lipsticks.

As for staining, I don't see an orange cast on my lips. Maybe Cosmopop doesn't stain?

COVERAGE
-------------------
The coverage is pretty good. Comparable to MAC Matte, Satins, Amplifieds and Cremesheens, I'd say. Thus, it does manage to tone down the natural pigmentation of my lips, but obviously, but insufficient to bring out the "Buttery, softened orange. Think creamsicle!" colour!

RATING:
3 out of 5 (would give it a 5 if it came out like the swatches in LimeCrime & Temptalia *sobbing my heart out*)

  1. Hi sweetie! Thanks for the lovely review. I'm sorry to hear you had trouble getting the color to show up on your lips. It's weird because I had no trouble with it showing up on Atim, who is very dark:

I do find that it's best to apply to clean, exfoliated lips without lip balm - that will dilute the color with its waxes and make it difficult to show up. If you feel it's a little drying, a drop of gloss on top will do the trick. Let me know how it works out for you! :)

  2. like we've discussed. this colour looks more like 'my beutiful rocket' than cosmopop! but i'm glad to hear the texture and pigmentation's great. i'll definitely give them a shot someday

  3. Cosmopop!! Oh dear, it looks like an orange instead of a nude peach =[

Try using a lip concealer first or even just a thin layer of foundation/concealer on your lips?

Oh yea - with your neutral/light skintone, I'm sure you'll be able to pull off their signature colours! Maybe try their black too? :P

    @Blair
It looks nude peach on virtually EVERYBODY except me *sobs* Now you know why I"m OBSESSED with nude lippies :P And I have a stash of lip concealers too - but it's just too much of a hassle...Sighs....
